The Ant and the Grasshopper

A calm bedtime story teaching children the value of hard work.

It was a quiet and bright summer day. The sun shone warmly in the sky, and a gentle breeze made the tall grass sway softly, as if nature itself was humming a lullaby.

In the middle of this peaceful field, a happy grasshopper jumped from leaf to leaf. He flapped his wings with joy and sang cheerful songs, proud of how free and lively he felt. His music floated through the air, mixing with the sounds of summer.

Suddenly, he noticed an ant walking slowly along the ground. The ant was carrying a big corn seed on her back. It was almost as large as she was! Step by step, she moved forward, working very hard.

The grasshopper laughed and called out kindly but teasingly,
“Hello, Ant! Why are you working so hard on such a beautiful day? That load looks heavy. Come and sing with me! Life is meant to be fun, not all work.”

The ant stopped for a moment and looked at him calmly.
“I am collecting food for the winter,” she replied. “When the cold days come, there will be nothing to eat. If I work now, I will be safe later. You should prepare too while the sun is still shining.”

The grasshopper laughed again and shook his head.
“Winter? That is so far away! Look around—everything is green and warm. I want to enjoy today. Work can wait!”

The ant said nothing more. She smiled gently and continued on her way, carrying food day after day. All summer long, she worked patiently, filling her home with enough food to last through the cold season.

The grasshopper, however, spent his days dancing, singing, and resting under the sun. He enjoyed every moment and never thought about tomorrow.

Soon, summer quietly slipped away. Autumn winds began to blow, and before anyone noticed, winter arrived. Snow covered the fields, and the air became cold and silent. Food was nowhere to be found.

The grasshopper felt cold and very hungry. His songs were gone, and he no longer had the strength to jump. As he wandered weakly, he passed by the ant’s home. Inside, he saw the ants warm and safe, sharing the food they had saved.

With a soft, sad voice, the grasshopper whispered,
“I should have listened. Preparing for the future is important. I understand that now.”

But sadly, it was too late.
