The Dolphin and the Monkey

Pride and lies lead to a dangerous fall at sea.

Long ago, sailors who set out on distant voyages across the seas would often bring animals aboard to keep their spirits high during the long and lonely journeys. These animals brought laughter and comfort to the harsh life at sea.

One day, a sailor preparing for a voyage decided to take along a lively little monkey. The monkey was playful and full of energy, and before long, it became the favorite of everyone on the ship. Its tricks and cheerful antics filled the deck with laughter.

But their joyful voyage was not meant to last.

As the ship sailed across the open sea, a violent storm suddenly struck. Towering waves crashed against the vessel, tossing it from side to side. The crew shouted in panic, struggling to save themselves. The storm raged with unstoppable force until the ship was swallowed by the furious waters and sank beneath the waves.

The sailors leapt into the sea, fighting to survive. The monkey, driven by instinct, also threw itself into the churning water. Helpless and terrified, it struggled as the waves carried it farther from safety.

At that moment, a dolphin swimming nearby noticed the monkey. From a distance, the dolphin mistook it for a human and hurried to help. Swiftly approaching, the dolphin lifted the monkey onto its back and began swimming toward the shore.

Clinging to the dolphin, the monkey felt both astonished and relieved.

As they swam, the dolphin decided to make conversation.

“Are you from Athens?” the dolphin asked kindly.

Wanting to appear important, the monkey puffed up with pride and replied without hesitation, “Of course! I am the son of one of the most noble and famous families in Athens.”

The dolphin nodded thoughtfully, though it was not fully convinced. After a moment, it asked another question.

“Then you must know Piraeus as well?”

Piraeus, the harbor of Athens, was unknown to the monkey. Mistaking it for a person’s name, the monkey confidently answered, “Certainly! Piraeus is my closest friend.”

At that, the dolphin realized the truth. The monkey had been lying. Offended by its arrogance and dishonesty, the dolphin decided it would no longer offer help. Without another word, it dove deep beneath the waves.

Caught off guard, the monkey slipped from the dolphin’s back and was left alone in the restless sea — a victim of its own deceit.

From that day on, the monkey learned a lesson it would never forget: Lies may bring momentary pride, but they destroy trust and can lead to one’s downfall. Honesty, however simple, is always the wiser path.
